David L. Layer

–

Frederick, Maryland

David Linwood Layer, 88, of Buckeystown, MD, passed away peacefully in his home on Nov. 12, 2016. He was born June 25, 1928, in Frederick, MD, to the late Ada and George Layer, and was the husband of Mary Layer for 65 years.

He worked many years as a Heavy Equipment Operator for Prince Mont Construction Company and later went on to co-owned his own company, David Equipment Company as a Minority Business. David was an active and devoted member of Buckeystown United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorable discharged in 1952. David joined the craft of the Masonic Under the Lodge James E. Stewart #49 of New Market, MD, earning the title of Worshipful Master. He was also a brother of The Eastern Star under the same lodge. David's love for baseball made him one of the most outstanding "short-stop players" in all of Frederick County during his playing days. His blanket that laid across his bed up to his death was no other than the blanket of his favorite football team "The Redskins".

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Carol (Gregory) Driver, Dinah Layer, Pamela Roberts, and Larry Jackson; 7 grandchildren, Tara (Marvin) Brown, Damion (Angel) Roberts, Tyrae (Lyanita) Layer, Katina (Stanley) Wooten, Dawnette (Terrence) Barnes, Shauna (Christopher) Lee, and Sharday Smith; 15 great-grandchildren, Bre'Ane Coleman, Naqula Pitts, Darion Brown, Akeylah Cooper, Dinasha Layer, Kourtney Brown, Andrew Roberts, Nataya Lee, Amaya Layer, Terrence Barnes Jr., Cameron Roberts, Nia Brown, Tyrae Layer Jr., Aaron Barnes, and Olivia Lee; 1 great great-grandchild, Mason Burrs; 1 god-daughter, Cammie Hopper; 1 sister, Mildred Onley; devoted niece, Barbra Linda Layer; devoted nephew, Grafton Layer, Sr.; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Joyce Smith; son-in-law, Kevin Smith; siblings, Addison, Samuel, and William Layer, Minnie Leekins, and Ada Ambush. David will be greatly missed by devoted neighbors and close friends, Dr. Larry and Betty Romane; and also those who knew him by Pops, Andre Weedon, James Slavin and Joseph Rakich; In fact we don't know anyone that knew him who didn't LOVE our Paw-Paw!

We thank God for his gift of our loving husband, father, and friend.
