Frederick, Maryland
Derrick Lannell Brightful (Humphrey) journeyed to be with his Lord and Savior on January 14, 2020 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Shannan Scott Brightful for 3 years.
Derrick was born to Barbara Jean Brightful and the late Ernest T. Thompson, Sr., on May 27, 1966. Derrick was given a variety of nicknames, but Humphrey, the name his grandmother, Dorothy Brightful, gave him just stuck. As a young boy he and a cousin from Richmond, VA, would spend hours singing "My name is Michael, I have a Nickle, I have a Nickel shiny and new," which drove everyone crazy.
Derrick was a graduate of Frederick High School, Class of 1984, and obtained his CDL Certificate. With this certificate he was able to secure many positions as a truck driver. He was a die-hard Raider fan, loved running his remote-controlled cars, going fishing with his grandchildren, brother in-law and friends, and also shared a love of watching wrestling with his wife, Shannan. Derrick was a member of Jackson Chapel UMC but was attending Ebenezer AME Church to support his best friend, Edward Lewis.
Besides his wife and mother, Derrick leaves to cherish his memory: daughters, Sian Kruger (Christopher) and Charity Stever; sons, Damian L. B-Smith and Brandon Smith; stepson, William E. Dorsey IV; grandchildren, Elijah Kruger, Neveah Goines, Nyjha Baker, Kahlil Kruger, Brooklyn Palmer, Javon Palmer, Alliahe Palmer, Anaya Kruger, King Bell, and Ka'mani "Peanut" Kruger; sisters, Jeannie "MiMi" Brown (Roger), Lynn Jackson (James) and Lacy Spencer; brother, Ernest T. Thompson, Jr. (Tonya); aunts, Patricia G. Gunn (Milton), Shirley Fossett (Eugene), Elizabeth "Roxa" Worrells, Dorothy V. Brightful, Mary Ellen Clark, Linda Brightful Barnes, Edna Brightful, and Willa Thomas; father and mother-in-laws, Charles E. Also left to cherish his memory are friends, Dennis Waters, Larry and Eric Miller, Vic and Vincent Crabill, Russell P. Gibbon, and a host of cousins, nephews and friends. He also leaves two cherished pets, Dakota (dog) and Diamond (cat).
