Joan Johnson

–

Frederick, Maryland

Joan Elizabeth Johnson, born May 2, 1946, in White Plains, NY, passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2024, in the arms of her loving daughter Racquel Johnson.

Raised by her devoted parents Joseph Earnest Thomas and Nina Belle Thomas, both who have preceded her in death, Joan grew up with a strong sense of family. After graduating from high school, Joan married Ronald Antonio Johnson, Sr, and dedicated her life to being a loving wife and mother. Together, they raised six children, although they experience the heartache of losing one child to a miscarriage.

Joan was a woman who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was an avid reader, loved doing Word Search puzzles and enjoyed watching YouTube videos. Her Sundays were sacred, as she faithfully attended online services with the Church of the Redeemer. Known for her sweet tooth, she had a special fondness for chocolate and other sweets.

She was a humble woman, very reserved, and never raised her voice. After many years as a dedicated housewife, Joan entered the workforce at a later age. First with Gleason Security, followed by American Can Company and her last at retirement in 2011 with NY Presbyterian Hospital as a medical transcriptionist. Upon retiring, she moved to Frederick, MD to live with her daughter Racquel, who became her primary caregiver.

During her years in Maryland, Joan enjoyed the pleasure of her daily meet and greets with husband, Ronald, who was the family informant. They would pray together, watch shows at times, gossip and sit quietly, enjoying each other’s company. Joan found comfort and joy in these interactions, particularly the loving greetings she exchanged with her daughter. Her affectionate daily greeting, “Daughter dear, who we greatly fear, you are home,” will be deeply missed. She took great pride in her children and grandchildren, always eager to hear about their lives and achievements.

Joan is survived by her: devoted husband of 58 years, Ronald Antonio Johnson, Sr; children, Ronald Antonio Jr, Racquel Johnson, Ramona Byrd, Barry Johnson, and J. Marcus Johnson; sisters, Patricia Willis and Janet Baskerville; grandchildren, Desiree Hicks, Darrielle Royster, De’La Johnson, Ashley Crate, Marcus Johnson, Sabrina Johnson, Keturah Johnson, Michaela Johnson, Caleb Johnson, Marquise Johnson, Sophia Johnson, and Judah Johnson; sister-in-law, Ruth Thomas; daughter-in-law, Nicole Johnson; grandson-in-law, Charles Hicks; son-in-law, Shune Byrd; nine great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who will cherish her memory.

Joan was preceded in death by her: parents, Joseph Earnest Thomas and Nina Belle Thomas; brothers, Joseph Thomas, Jr. and Robert Thomas; and sisters, Slyvia Johnson and Carolyn Sophie Thomas aka Snookie.

Her life was a testament to love, humility, and devotion to family. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her unwavering faith, and the warmth she brought into the lives of those around her.
