Karen Bonita Jenkins, affectionately known as “Ms. Karen” to the children and families of Stepping Stone Early Learning Center and “Miss B” to her family, peacefully departed this life on September 13, 2026, at the age of 65.
Born on April 15, 1961, in Frederick, Maryland, Karen was the beloved daughter of the late Margaret Jenkins and Rufus Brown. She was a proud graduate of Frederick High School, Class of 1979, and remained deeply connected to the community she called home.
Karen devoted more than 25 years of her life to Stepping Stone Early Learning Center, where she lovingly cared for and nurtured generations of children. Her natural gift for caregiving extended beyond her professional life, as she also worked as a senior caregiver. Caring for others was not simply something Karen did—it was a part of who she was.
She was a proud member of Madame C.J. Walker Temple #509 and was known for her kind heart, compassion, loving spirit, and ability to make people feel welcomed. Karen was truly a social butterfly and had a way of connecting with people wherever she went. She was loved by many and will forever be remembered for the joy and warmth she brought into the lives of others.
Karen found her greatest happiness in being surrounded by family. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, listening to music, dancing, shopping, talking on the phone, crocheting, and caring for her beloved plants. Above all, she cherished the people she loved and treasured every opportunity to create memories with them.
Karen leaves to cherish her beautiful memory her loving children, Maressa Jackson and Chaquan Jackson; her cherished grandchildren, Zahara, Ajinae, Kash, and Alani; her siblings, William Jenkins (Lily), Beverly Bowens (David), Malik Adisa-Ajene, and Carlene Martin; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who loved her dearly. She also leaves behind a special aunt, Frances Jenkins, whom she held close to her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret Jenkins and Rufus Brown; her sister, Sonja Jenkins; her nephew, Breon Stockton; her great-niece, Janiyah Stockton; her uncle, James Brown; and her beloved cousin, Sharon Brown of Harlem, New York.
Karen’s presence touched countless lives. To the children who knew her as Ms. Karen, the family who knew her as Miss B, and the many friends who loved her, she was a source of love, laughter, comfort, and care.
Though she is no longer with us in person, the love she gave, the lives she touched, and the memories she created will live on through her family, her friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known her.
Rest peacefully, Karen.
Your love was your legacy, and your memory will live forever.
