Katherine Cecelia "Minnie" Bowens

–

Frederick, Maryland

Katherine Cecelia Bowens, affectionately known as “Minnie,” was born on March 20, 1933, in Frederick, Maryland, to John Hare and Mary Cecelia Holliday. She passed away peacefully on October 2, 2026, at the age of 93, leaving behind a life defined by strength, devotion, generosity, and a spirit that touched all who knew her.

For 28 years, Minnie worked at The Province restaurant alongside her close friend and owner, Nancy Floria. In the kitchen, Minnie became something of a local legend. Known affectionately as “The Queen of Quiche,” her creations were so beloved that people traveled from near and far just to enjoy a slice.
Minnie ruled the kitchen with confidence, skill, and heart—and even the chefs knew it was best to stay on her good side. Nancy knew that whenever Minnie was there, the restaurant was in capable hands. Her strong work ethic, leadership, and dedication helped keep the kitchen running smoothly, and she left an impression on coworkers and customers alike.

Outside of the kitchen, Minnie embraced life with curiosity and joy. She loved traveling abroad, experiencing new places, and discovering different cultures. But among her greatest joys was spending time with the people she loved. She cherished her family and friends and brought laughter, warmth, and a comforting presence to the gatherings and moments they shared.

Minnie is survived by her grandsons, Terrell Holliday (Jennifer) and Jamil Thomas; her great-grandson, Tyson Holliday; her brother, Robert Holliday (Martha); and her sisters, Betty Bowie (Gilbert) and Rose McClary-Jones. She also leaves behind extended family, dear friends, and many others whose lives were touched by her kindness and generosity.

She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Melissa Holliday-Thomas; her sister, Hellen Reid-Nelson; her brother, Charles Holliday Sr.; and her husband, Elmwood Bowens.

The family extends heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Kay Baugher, Sandy Cross, and John Bowens for their friendship, care, and support of Katherine throughout the years. Their kindness and presence in her life will always be remembered and deeply appreciated.

Minnie lived a remarkable 93 years, leaving behind memories that will continue to bring smiles, laughter, and comfort to those who loved her. She will be remembered for her strength and generosity, her adventurous spirit, and her devotion to family and friends.

Although she will be deeply missed, the love Minnie gave so freely and the memories she created will remain with her family and friends for generations to come.
