Verbert C. Doweary Obituary (1921 - 2014)

Verbert C. Doweary, 92, of Mount Airy, Maryland, departed this life on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Sunrise of Columbia Assisted Living. She was born on November 25, 1921, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late Mary Ann and John Cook. She was married to the late Melvin M. Doweary for 63 years until his death in 2008. She attended Tuskegee Institute. After moving to Maryland, she was employed as an LPN at Springfield State Hospital. Verbert spent most of her life as a caretaker-- first to her mother, then to various members of the community and lastly to her husband. She was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church where she served in various positions including Sunday School teacher and treasurer. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing Scrabble and watching college basketball. Verbert is survived by her 6 children, Melvin Jr., Jonnifer Lennon (Robert), Marilyn, Erle (Ingrid) Donna Anderson (Tim), and Angela Dillon (Curtis). In addition, she is survived by her 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, to whom she was affectionately known as "G.G. ma". She is also survived by a host of in-laws, extended family and friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Juliette Marshall Dowery, and son-in-law Calvin Williams. A viewing will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2014, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Gary Rollins Funeral Home, 110 W. South St., Frederick, MD. Funeral services are at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 14, 2014, at Damascus United Methodist Church, 9700 New Church St., Damascus, MD 20872.
